Academic Decathlon competed on March 4th and 5th at the Regional State event at NIACC in Mason City. Students qualified for this by placing at a competition on January 27th and 28th at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Academic Decathlon is a competition across the state comprised of ten events. There are seven multiple-choice exams in: art, economics, literature, mathematics, music, science, and social science. Students also took an essay exam and were judged in a speech event as well as an interview event.
Algona High School students did extremely well at State! Wren Menke placed gold in Division Small Literature Honor, bronze in Division Small Music Honor, bronze in Division Small Science Honor, and bronze in Division Small Interview Honor. Isabelle Gibbs placed silver in Division Small Speech Honor. Faith Huber placed gold in Division Small Economics Scholastic. Ryan McCauley placed bronze in Division Small Science Scholastic. Wyatt Struecker placed bronze in Division Small Science Scholastic. Willow Kent placed bronze Division Small Interview Varsity.
Advisor, Mr. Stein, stated, “Algona held its own against the top 24 teams in the state. We were 5th overall in our division with nine medalists.” Congratulations to all of the Academic Decathlon students. You all did great!
