Quiz bowl home meet 2022

Algona High School hosted and competed in a quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, November 12th. This tournament was a national qualifier, which means the top ten percent of teams who placed get to compete at the national level in Atlanta, Georgia, this spring. There were a total of 24 teams competing from 12 different schools.

This tournament worked by having forty toss up questions, worth ten points. After every toss up question, depending on whether you got it right or not, you would get a corresponding bonus question worth five points. Then you moved into the lighting round where the teams would answer a series of ten questions in sixty seconds. The placements were based firstly on win to loss ratio and secondly on total points scored.

Algona had four teams competing in their home tournament. Their first team, team one, consisted of Faith Huber, Aidan Morris, Toby Nelton, Waverly Espe, and Quintin Frambach. Team one ended the day placing third overall. Team two consisted of Izaha Crawmer, Brennan Kajewski, Ace Studer, and Chance Studer, and they placed seventh. Team three consisted of Jacob Ward, Joseph Strueker, Nick DePue, and Joey Merrill, and this team placed 21st. Finally, the fourth team consisted of Flynn McCann, Elliot McKeage, Hannah Severson, and Remi Shaffer who ended the day in 24th. Remi Shaffer says, ”You don’t need to be smart, as long as you’re contributing”

Up next, the quiz bowl team travels to Spirit Lake on Saturday, December 3rd, to play in their third tournament this year.
