Model UN fall 2024

The Model UN team headed to the campus of the University of Northern Iowa to compete on April third and April fourth.

Model UN is a hands-on learning experience where a bunch of schools get together to simulate and act as diplomats from different countries. Then they debate to find solutions to different global issues. These events help students with diplomatic, negotiation, and public speaking skills. Model UN member Joseph Struecker says, ā€œIt was fun debating with other students on world issues.ā€

The Model UN team represented the countries of India and Guyana. They covered six main sections of discussion: ECOSOC, disarmament, political, security, social humanitarian, cultural, security council, and legal.

For ECOSOC, they covered two topics. Those topics were the production of microplastics and the burning of dangerous chemical-eating plastics. Disarmament is the next section of discussion. The two topics they covered were the arms race in space and AI-based weapons. The next section that they discussed was political and security. The topics that they discussed were election integrity and refugee security. The next section they discussed was social, humanitarian, and cultural. The two topics they discussed were democratic developing countriesā€™ education and sports and music for developing countries. Security council was another portion of the topics they covered. The topics in this section talked about the war in Sudan and the problems going on in Syria. The final section that they discussed is legal. The topics in this section were water and the kashmir conflict.

Good luck to all the Bulldogs at UNI, and debate like champs!
