The record breaking season of the Algona girls’ wrestling team is drawing to a close. The girls finished off their season with a dual team record of 12-0.
Last week, on January 31st, 11 girls competed at the Regional competition in East Buchanan. Algona qualified three athletes for the State tournament. The qualifiers were senior, Malyn Davis; sophomore, Mara Davis; and freshman, Regan Jensen.
Mara Davis, at 100 pounds, punched her ticket by placing first in her bracket. She pinned her way to the top of the podium, only wrestling for three minutes all day. At 120 pounds, Malyn Davis placed second in her bracket, also pinning her way to the finals match. Regan Jensen also placed second, in the 155 pound bracket. Mara and Malyn Davis were both seeded second in their brackets. Jensen was seeded third and beat the second seed to guarantee her place on the podium. Third place finishers from AHS include Emelia Owen and Reagan Haynes. During the semifinal round, all Algona girls, except for one, were still on the front side of their brackets!
The qualifying wrestlers headed down to Coralville on the fifth. They were up bright and early yesterday to weigh-in and begin wrestling. Mara Davis is seeded sixth, Malyn Davis is seeded 12th, and Jensen is seeded eighth in her bracket. Mara’s first match was against Penelope Wearmouth from Martensdale St. Mary’s, with a win! Malyn’s first match of the day was against Josie Lennon of Akron Westfield, also resulting in a Bulldog win! Jensen's first match was against Kasee Huss of MOC Floyd Valley, also with a win! All three girls lost their second matches, but that still means they can work for a placement match today. Best of luck to the girls competing!
