Bulldog basketball is nearing the end of its regular season. The girls will play their last regular season game on February 11th before their first Regional game on February 15th. The boys’ season goes a little later, with their last regular season game being on February 18th. The boys start their first round of postseason play on February 24th. Kayla Buscher comments on how she feels about wrapping up her senior season, “The playoffs aren't ready for us.”
On January 23rd, Bulldog basketball hosted the Pocahontas Area Indians. The girls had a big win over a tough Indian squad with a final score of 59-56. Top scorer for the girls was Hayden Kuhlmann with 16 points on the night.
The boys came away with a huge victory over the Indians with a final score of 87-62. Leading scorer for the night was Ben Helmers with 51 points. According to IAbasketball, this puts Helmers on a list of just two other players who have dropped 50 or more points in a single game this season so far.
On Friday, January 24th, the boys and girls took the long trip to Iowa Falls Alden for more Conference play. The girls’ basketball team had a big victory over the Cadets with a final score of 51-46. Maya Lentz was the leading scorer for the girls and Lauren McLaughlin had five rebounds.
The boys’ team had a very nerve racking game that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The boys’ team ended up winning by one point with a final score of 55-54. Helmers was the leading scorer for the night with 36 points. Jacob Burns talks about how teamwork is the way to success, “Rise as one.”
The Bulldogs were back on the road Tuesday, January 28th to take on the St. Edmond Gaels. The girls won over the Gaels with an overall score of 64-58. Leading in assists was Hayden Kuhlmann. Top scorer for the girls was Lauren McLaughlin. McLaughlin had 25 points, which put her over her career 1000th point.
The boys’ basketball team lost to a tough, 12-2 St. Edmond squad with a final score of 82-61.
Tonight, January 31st, the Bulldogs host Conference team Webster City. The Lady Lynx enter this game with an overall record of 3-13 while the Bulldogs enter with an overall record of 14-3.
The Webster City boys’ basketball team will enter this Conference game with an overall record of 5-10. The Bulldogs enter this game with a record of 6-9.
Up next for the Bulldogs is non-Conference play against Mason City. The boys host Mason City on Saturday, February 1st, while the Lady Bulldogs head to Mason City on Monday, February 3rd. The boys’ basketball team is also on the road February 3rd as they head to Clarion to play the boys’ Clarion-Goldfield-Dows team.
