While some will finish off a hard fought, record breaking season, others will punch their tickets for a chance to stand on the top of the State podium.

On Saturday, January 25th, the Algona girls’ wrestling team made the trip to Mason City to compete in one last grueling tournament composed of seven ranked teams and over 50 ranked wrestlers including Mara Davis ranked 6th, Reese Taylor ranked 11th, Malyn Davis ranked 6th, and Regan Jensen ranked 9th, according to IAWrestle. Some standout performances from the day include Malyn Davis in second place and Jensen taking home a fourth place medal. The team ended their day placing sixth. That capped off the season for Kiah Villareal, Alyssa Miller, Rylie Nicholson, Lydia Hersom, Hannah Foust, Kayle Gomez, and Eden Geddings, all returning members for next year.

This morning, 11 wrestlers of the girls’ team traveled to compete in their regional State qualifying competition held in East Buchanan with a start time of 4 pm. They are Mara Davis, Reese Taylor, Makayla Erpelding, Laura Stohr, Malyn Davis, Lilly Allie, Alissa Engel, Sienna Fehr, Emmy Owen, Regan Jensen, and Reagan Haynes. Those who can pull off a top two finish will be granted the opportunity to finish their season in Coralville on February 6th & 7th, at State. Senior wrestler, Makayla Erpelding, said, “I am planning on taking it match by match, and am excited to see how far I’ll go.” Go Dogs!
