Frank Lloyd Wright tour 2024

Written by Josie Jennings

At AHS, the family and consumer science teacher, Mrs. Louwagie, brings her students to a variety of field trips. Louwagie stated, “It's so fun to have the chance to get out and get students real world experiences.” Louwagie has a variety of different classes that she teaches throughout the year and is always looking to find more opportunities for her students and the ability to broaden their horizons for creativity and opportunity.

Louwagie’s creative textiles class went to the Quilted Steeple. They got to see the store portion along with the quilting station and learn about the variety of machines. They then were taken to the basement to view the retreat portion of the Steeple where you can there for a week or weekend and quilt.

In the child development class, they got to go out to the hospital and view the birthing center. A nurse showed them around and explained the different rooms and machines.

In Louwagie’s housing and interior design class, the students went to Mason City to tour the Stockman House to learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright's fireproof house. Along with learning more about Wright, the students visited The Park Inn. The Park Inn is also located in Mason City and is the last remaining hotel that Wright designed.

Next term at AHS, Louwagie is hoping to bring her baking class to Feed Mill here in town to see the variety of different fresh baked goods they offer every day. Louwagie also wants to take her baking students to Country Maid in West Bend. At Country Maid they can tour the facility and the interesting story behind Country Maid’s famous butter braids and other goodies they make.
