A Day of Musical Growth and Inspiration: Students Shine at UNI Wind Band Invitational 2025
In November, the AHS Concert Band was selected to perform at the University of Northern Iowa Wind Band Invitational 2025—a prestigious event hosted by Dr. Danny Galyen. Among only three high school ensembles invited to this exclusive gathering, our students joined Waukee High School and Iowa City High School for a day full of education, collaboration, and musical excellence.
From the moment they arrived, the students were immersed in a rich musical environment. They began the day with section-specific masterclasses led by UNI's esteemed music faculty, offering them invaluable insights and techniques tailored to their instruments. The learning continued as they had the opportunity to observe a Waukee High School rehearsal conducted by Dr. Galyen and Dr. Justin Merz, gaining a deeper understanding of ensemble dynamics and advanced rehearsal strategies.
The experience culminated in a rehearsal and clinic session with both Dr. Galyen and Dr. Merz—an extraordinary chance for the students to refine their repertoire under the guidance of renowned educators. Following a well-earned dinner break, the students took the stage to perform their music, showcasing the skills and inspiration they had gathered throughout the day.
As if the experience wasn’t already unforgettable, the evening concert also featured stunning performances by Waukee and Iowa City High School Bands, and concluded with a powerful performance by the UNI Wind Symphony—a fitting finale to an inspiring day.
