The Algona High School jazz band competed in the jazz championships in Ames on Tuesday, April 8th. In order to qualify for the championships, the band must have been in the top two in their district. Algona won the North Central District, earning them this honor. The jazz band performed and competed against jazz bands from other schools in class 3A.

The AHS jazz band is composed of 20 members: Joseph Merrill, David Kissinger, Allison Trunkhill, Ace Studer, Chance Studer, Axel Mortensen, Paul Kissinger, Kennedi Blair, Cassidy Bierstedt, Ada Kortenber, Owen Doocy, Emma Smith, Landon Menning, Abigail Droessler, Owen Orban, Thomas Espe, Alejandro Gonzalez Gutierrez, Jaxon Olmstead, and Catherine Hart.

There were 15 bands in class 3A who performed at championships, and the top eight were announced at this event. Although Algona did get announced, they competed and participated well and sophomore Catherine Hart received outstanding soloist honors. Mr. Liebl says, “It is the highest honor to be invited to jazz championships.”

You can see these musicians and the rest of the AHS band members at their next concert on Tuesday, May 13th.
