Up until last week, Algona Community School District has had a great year when it comes to weather. Every school district has a set amount of hours to meet in a school year. The state minimum is 1,080 hours. However, schools in Iowa add in extra days, built in for snow days, which varies by schools. Algona schools have 1,140 hours built into the 2024-2025 schedule.
This year was looking good until these past few weeks, when northern Iowa got hit with multiple snow storms; this included multiple days off school. Ezra Oldenkamp says, “It was fun at first then it got boring.”
Algona schools have 7.5 hours left, which is a little over a day of school. A little bit of bad weather can be ok, but if it happens to use up all of the hours, then Algona students will have to make up those hours.
