Algona High School is wrapping up the third term, which ends Friday, March 8th. This means that the school year is coming close to an end.
AHS students have now had three terms with the new schedule. The adjustment has students feeling mixed emotions. Ben Helmers, a junior at AHS, says, “I like the new schedule better because the classes are shorter and I don’t have to take core classes each term.” Junior, Izaha Crawmer, says, “I feel that the classes are still too long and that five classes a day is not enough.” A poll was run in the journalism class of seventeen students. Eleven voted they dislike the new schedule while six voted they do like the schedule.
As term three comes to an end, winter sports have wrapped up their seasons. The AHS winter sport teams all had great seasons. The boys’ wrestling team won the NCC Duals Championship, the NCC Conference Championship, were District Champions, and placed eighth at State Duals. Seven boys qualified for the State meet: Issac Wilson, Elijah Wilhite, Barrett Morgan, Ashton Moreno, Tate Slagle, Taevyn Zinnel, and Brody Shipler. AHS came away with three wrestlers making the podium: Tate Slagle (5th), Taevyn Zinnel (7th), and Barrett Morgan (8th). Congratulations to the boys’ wrestling team. The girls’ wrestling team sent six of their own wrestlers to the State tournament: Malyn Davis, Abbe Gorahm, Gretchen Gorham, Harley Tobin, Laura Stohr, and Reagan Haynes. Congratulations to the girls’ wrestling team on a great season! The boys’ basketball team finished the season with a 14-8 record, losing in the first round to the North Polk Comets. The girls’ basketball team were NCC champions, losing in the third round of playoff action, and finished their season with a 19-5 record. Congratulations to the AHS basketball teams.
Spring is here, and with that comes Algona’s spring sports. The track teams started their practices last Monday and golf will start on March 11th.
With only fourth term left, students have just a little time left to enjoy this school year. Make the most of your remaining time, as the last day of school is scheduled for May 15th for the seniors and May 22nd for all other grades!
