Shake the Lakes 2024

On February 16, the AHS Jazz Choir, Scarlet Midnight, participated in the Shake the Lakes Jazz and Show Choir Competition at Spirit Lake. They took first place in the class 3A competition against other jazz choirs, and their hard work paid off! At the end of the night,  three judges evaluated them, and, following their performance, one judge gave them a critique.

They were also given a trophy for winning the Social Media Superstar Award. This award is chosen by students of the Spirit Lake social media team, they choose one jazz choir and one show choir. To win, the choirs must provide the Shake the Lakes social media with lots of funny, kind, and creative interactions online.

Scarlet Midnight performed the same three set performance that they previously performed at the State contest, hosted at the Surf Ballroom, in Clear Lake, where they received three straight Division I’s  from all of the judges! Their set list includes:  “Hand in Hand” by Kait Karrigan, “You Make Me Feel So Young” by Frank Sinatra, and “Orange and Blue” by Sarah Jarosz. Solos were performed by  Aleena Rosacker and Seth Walker in “Hand in Hand,” and Sydney Seebecker, with CJ Awe, in “You Make Me Feel So Young.”

The choir has put in the hard work with their 7am practices, three times a week. If you missed their last performance, you’ll have another chance to see them compete. They have one last competition for this year’s season, in Emmetsburg, at the Emmetsburg Extravaganza, on March 3rd.

Student, Reese Taylor, says, “I didn’t wake up at 6 every morning for nothing,” after winning first place at Shake the Lakes. Wish the choir good luck for their last competition in March!
