The Algona wrestling team completed its final week of the regular season. They finished out the season with the NCC tournament at Iowa Falls followed by two triangular meets the following week at West Hancock and Garner.

The NCC tournament was held in Iowa Falls on the 25th of January. The Bulldogs finished 5th out of 7 teams in a very close contest amongst the top five. Cole Lewis and Andew Hamiliton were crowned NCC champions at 195 and 220 pounds. Gavin Meints finished second at 285 pounds. Jacob Zabka and Collin Murphy came in third on the day. Reece Eakins and Luke McKenna both finished in fourth.

On the 28th, the team traveled to West Hancock and competed in a quad with West Hancock, Gilbert, and Belmond-Klemme. First Algona wrestled Gilbert and came away with a 39-18 victory. Algona then wrestled Belmond, which didn’t seem to be much of a competition, finishing with a 78-16 score. Finally Algona wrestled West Hancock and won a close battle 38-36. Wrestlers who finished 3-0 on the day were Andrew Hamiliton, Hayden Thompson, Brandon Harris, Jacob Zabka, and Hunter Penton.

Two days later, the team went to Garner and battled against Eagle Grove and G-H-V for their last team-dual of the season. The Bulldogs came away with two more victories, winning 51-24 against Eagle Grove and 47-32 against G-H-V. Wrestlers winning both of their matches were Jacob Zabka, Cole Lewis, Andrew Hamiliton, Gavin Meints, Hunter Berry, Hayden Thompson, and Spencer Long. The team finished the regular season with a dual record of 16-3!

Post season wrestling starts with Sectionals on Saturday, February 8th, in Clear Lake. “I’m really excited for the postseason to start,” says senior wrestler Andrew Hamilton. The teams competing at Sectionals are Algona, Clear Lake, Osage, Hampton-Dumont-Cal, Forest City, and G-H-V. The top two wrestlers in each weight class will advance to Districts in Algona on the 15th! Good luck wrestlers!
