On January 24th, seven girl wrestlers from AHS headed down to Waverly for the second ever IWCOA Girls’ State wrestling meet. Among the seven were Sydney Hoover, Brooklynn Wille, Radaisyia Thomas, Eliza Schultz, Bethany Carlson, Sophie Degner, and Madi Gifford. They were accompanied by their coach, Tong-Uk Yi. These girls have been working hard for this opportunity since wrestling started back in November.
The first day had its ups and downs as the girls wrestled hard, but only two were able to move on to the next day. Sophie Degner went 5-2 on the weekend and placed 7th. She was Algona’s first ever girl to place at State. “It was a new experience that I’m happy I did. I’m glad the school board approved this club; it’s a great activity with a lot of valuable skills learned,” Degner said.
Among the seven girls, two were seniors and the rest were underclassmen. All of the returning wrestlers hope to find themselves back at the State meet on the podium next year.
