Another exciting week for the swimmers

On Thursday, September 12, the AHS Girls’ Swim Team competed in a dual meet with Fort Dodge. The girls worked hard, but they didn’t come home with the win. The best finishes included the second place 200 Free Relay team of Aliyah Buscher, Cathryn Houge, Carla Steinman, and Cheyanne Fries with a time of 2:03.95. Houge also came in 2nd in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:29.56.

On Tuesday, September 17th, the girls traveled to Perry for a double duel with Perry and Storm Lake.  They lost to Storm Lake 80-78 and tied with Perry 73-73. First place finishes were by the 200 Medley Relay team of Pollock, Houge, Ross, and Fries with a time of 2:18.28 and Cheyanne Fries in the 50 Free with a time of 28.75. Second place finishes went to Cathryn Houge in the 200 IM in 3:01.23, Kaitlyn Pollock in the 100 Back with a time of 1:22.83, Cayla Steinman in the 500 Free with a time of 7:23.42, and the 400 Free Relay team of Buscher, Wiita, Ross, and Fries with a time of 4:50.27. “The girls did a much better job tonight than at the last meet.  They had 19 better times and were competing in their events. Also several girls tried different events tonight and did very well,” said Coach Fisher.

The team competed in a home meet at Algona Family YMCA on Tuesday, September 24th, during a lightning storm. While the event was called at event 16 due to the weather, there were some good finishes. The 200 Med Relay team of Kaitlyn Pollock, Cathryn Houge, Emma Ross, and Cheyanne Fries finished third in a time of 2:20.55.   Fries also finished second in the 50 free with a time of 28.26. There were some girls with personal bests, including Aliyah Buscher in the 50 Free and Trysta Penning in the 100 Free. 

The team then traveled to Fort Dodge on Thursday, September 26th, and split a double dual. They lost to Fort Dodge 110-45 but beat Perry 95-21. Against Fort Dodge, the girls improved by 35 points from their last competitive meet with them. Second place finishes on the night include the 200 Medley Relay of Pollock, Houge, Ross, and Fries in 2:19.22, Ross in the 100 Fly with 1:16.80, Houge in the 100 Breaststroke in 1:26.26, and the 200 Free Relay team of Buscher, Houge, Madi Gifford, and Fries in 2:04.69. 

Over the last couple of meets, there have been 15 improved times! The girls are definitely working and improving throughout the season. 

Next up for the girls is a meet at Storm Lake on Thursday, October 3. They will also be home again on October 10th for Senior Night.
