AHS softball finishes 5th at State
In its first ever State playoff berth, Algona High School ended up finishing fifth. They ended their season with an 18-11 overall record and graduated three seniors.
Qualifying for State was quite a challenge, but the Bulldogs were up to the task. The Bulldogs first played Estherville-Lincoln-Central and came away with a 2-1 win in the 8th inning. Alyssa Hentges scored the winning run on a dropped third strike.
Next the Bulldogs took on 3A’s 3rd ranked Humboldt Wildcats. The girls fought hard and came away with a 4-2 win. Kameryn Etherington’s pitching kept the Wildcats’ points low and allowed the Dogs to come out on top.
In the first round of State tournament play at Roger’s Park in Fort Dodge, the #8 seed Bulldogs took on the #1 seed Davenport-Assumption. Davenport-Assumption came into the match with a 38-2 record. The Bulldogs put up a hard fight but lost 2-3. Davenport-Assumption went on to win the State 3A title and Algona’s game was the closest score of the tournament for them.
In the consolation round, Algona took on Albia and came away with a 5-4 win. This win placed the Bulldogs in 5th in the state.
NCC All Conference honors went to Kameryn Etherington, first team utility; Nicole Smidt, 2nd team infield; Alyssa Hentges, 2nd team infield; and Ashlin Young, 3rd team.
The team was coached by Jackie Fonley with assistants Greg Wellman, Shelly TerHark, and Brooke Fonley.
